Hermès Upcycled Sustainability

The French fashion house Hermès has launched a new collection, dubbed “Petit H” .  Company artisans recycle defective merchandise and cutting-floor waste such as castoff teapot spouts into jewelry hangers, flawed crystal tableware into a set of dumbbells, and leather scraps into a dramatic necklace high-end jewelry among other decorative accessories. Viola – glamorous upcycling. The first show/trunk sale ran Nov. 13 to Dec. 4, 2010 at the luxury goods manufacturer/retailer’s flagship store in Paris. According to sustainable fashion site Ecouterre, collections are scheduled for Tokyo and Osaka in May, and New York and Beverly Hills in October.

H&M Recycled Threads

Leave it to the Brit label H&M to produce sustainable style using recycled PET bottles or textile waste. Available this spring, these styles are a nod to the 60’s and 70’s and include stand-outs such as this floral print chiffon dress made from recycled polyester and shorts of  organic cotton or linen.

On the home front, American designer  Tim Byrne re-imagines old factory cast-offs as stylish and functional tables by combining them with iron, exotic wood, aluminum footings and glass.

The best way to brighten up a dull wintry day?  A great hat.  Back in the 1900’s through the era of Jackie O and the now-iconic pillbox hat, a lady always wore a hat (and gloves-we’ll chat about that topic another day).  Now it takes either a Mad Men inspired party or a cold or rainy day to don a hat.  Here are my top picks:

On the left:  A quirky combination of bohemian hippie chic  with its’ wide band and braided fringed tassels meets uptown girl with its’ panther print.  A hat that either you (or JLo) can rock.  Wear it with a fitted black sweater dress or a pair of bootleg jeans and a longer length tee or blouse and you’ll look great.  Fur Canyon hat in available at Barneys NY $225 at

On the right, a camel colored version without the extra embellishments $46.55 available at

Military Style is everywhere.  You’ll be in shipshape form with this crisp cap pictured on the left by Jessica Simpson.  $28 available at  On the right is Calvin Klein‘s version for $40.  Note the interesting zipper band detail. Available at

Trapper Hats are huge this winter.  Combine with shearling lining like the UGG version on the left $175 or faux fur like the hat by Cassin $135 on the right and you will have a hat that will not only keep you warm but you’ll be perfectly au courant.  Available at

Okay, so you aren’t going to wear these beauties to the office – uh, unless you work at Vogue, but for that special occasion these hats are stunning. Who can resist? Not for the shy-you will be noticed!  Eugenie Kim Cloche Ombre Feather Velour hat $485 on the left and Diane Von Furstenburg Shiloh hat on the right $285.

BAHAUS style became one of the most influential currents in Modernist architecture and modern design.  Its’ streamlined, minimalist vocabulary translates easily into today’s clean approach to dressing.  One designer embracing this modern, minimalist mindset is Jil Sander.

Antoni Gaudi the brilliant Spanish architect of the last century was a member of the  Expressionist movement.  A master of many media including ceramics, stained glass and wrought iron, he employed the use of color and bold pattern in his design work.  His modern day fashion equivalent is Miu Miu, with its’ large scale geometric patterned dresses and brilliant color combinations the connections are clear.

Continuing my focus from yesterday’s blog on holiday shoes, here are my picks for the best holiday dresses featuring interesting details.

My favorite Los Angeles fashion designer, ROBERT RODRIGUEZ,  really knows how to create a beautifully detailed garment.  Take a look at this fabulous teal one shoulder dress with feather detail at the waist.  This silhouette is flattering for all figure types and most excellent for curvy gals.  Take note of how this is dress is styled with black leather gloves, lace stockings and black booties making this look rock.  Personally, I’d choose a big scale choker necklace with a reflective or sparkly quality like rhinestones, or lucite with lots of silver chain to complete this look for a holiday party.

VALENTINO’s nude dress with black lace details is stunning.

NANETTE LEPORE has a platinum colored cowl neck dress richly embroidered with tribal detailing.

L.A.M.B. has a cleverly detailed ponte knit dress featuring a collar and puffed sleeves of leather.  I love the contrast of the smooth leather against the textured knit.

It’s Halloween and my mind is on all the alluring and dark scents available in perfume or candle form.  I have three recommendations for you to peruse and discover what appeals to you.

If you are interested in a unique perfumerie check out Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab available online at

This website is wonderfully creative and unfolds like a surreal story with scents cleverly organized under various themes like Carnaval Diabolique and Bewitching Brews.  What could be more perfect for all hallow’s eve?

If you are in the mood for candle scents I recommend you visit for their Baies “Noire/Black” Berries candle $68.  While the scent is classified as fruit based, the candle container sets a dark and somber mood so fitting for today’s theme.

Go to for talented designer favorite of mine Jonathan Adler’s Muse Noir Candle $68.  It comes in an intriguing container that will last long after the candle has burned down.  The fragrance features plum and bergamot mixed with amber and vetiver.
