Hermès Upcycled Sustainability

The French fashion house Hermès has launched a new collection, dubbed “Petit H” .  Company artisans recycle defective merchandise and cutting-floor waste such as castoff teapot spouts into jewelry hangers, flawed crystal tableware into a set of dumbbells, and leather scraps into a dramatic necklace high-end jewelry among other decorative accessories. Viola – glamorous upcycling. The first show/trunk sale ran Nov. 13 to Dec. 4, 2010 at the luxury goods manufacturer/retailer’s flagship store in Paris. According to sustainable fashion site Ecouterre, collections are scheduled for Tokyo and Osaka in May, and New York and Beverly Hills in October.

H&M Recycled Threads

Leave it to the Brit label H&M to produce sustainable style using recycled PET bottles or textile waste. Available this spring, these styles are a nod to the 60’s and 70’s and include stand-outs such as this floral print chiffon dress made from recycled polyester and shorts of  organic cotton or linen.

On the home front, American designer  Tim Byrne re-imagines old factory cast-offs as stylish and functional tables by combining them with iron, exotic wood, aluminum footings and glass. http://timbyrnedesigns.com

I love all things summer so when the days grow shorter and darker the challenge for me is how to keep that summer feeling.  Recently, I discovered a great way to add the freshness to autumn and winter days: combine citrus with woodsy in a fragrance!  Here are my top choices that capture the essence of this idea beautifully;  both are designed to appeal to a man or a woman-even better:

Aqua di Parma Colonia Essenza,  made in the Italian tradition from this perfumerie begun in the 1930’s will not only sit pretty (or handsomely) on your counter but it will be even more wonderful on you. Citrusy bergamont, lemon, mandarin, orange and grapefruit combine with woodsy notes including vetiver and amber to produce this elegant and understated fragrance.

Voyage d’Hermes is housed in an outstanding bottle design.  Modern and sleek and (a plus) refillable!  This fragrance from luxury brand Hermes fragrance designer Jean-Claude Ellena, smells citrusy at first then becomes woodsy and musky.  A great choice for an everyday fragrance – in spite of the moniker voyage- I see it more as a stay put kinda scent that you can wear around town for work and other appointments.
