explore express experience

Color forecasters are calling for it, celebrities are walking the red carpet in it and I can”t resist it.  Associated with royalty, spirituality and uncommonly found in nature, it may hold the most attraction for those who consider themselves to be unconventional.  What is it?  The color purple, of course.  Take a look at some haute purple fashion to choose your favorite way to express your inner princess.

January’s Golden Globes featured these beautiful actresses all in various shades of the regal hue (left to right):  Jane Krakowski in a J. Mendel goddess gown, Rose Byrne i LanvinLeona Lewis in a Roberto Cavalli gown, Sandra Bullock in Bottega Veneta and Alfre Woodward in a Pamela Rolland dress.

Hermès Upcycled Sustainability

The French fashion house Hermès has launched a new collection, dubbed “Petit H” .  Company artisans recycle defective merchandise and cutting-floor waste such as castoff teapot spouts into jewelry hangers, flawed crystal tableware into a set of dumbbells, and leather scraps into a dramatic necklace high-end jewelry among other decorative accessories. Viola – glamorous upcycling. The first show/trunk sale ran Nov. 13 to Dec. 4, 2010 at the luxury goods manufacturer/retailer’s flagship store in Paris. According to sustainable fashion site Ecouterre, collections are scheduled for Tokyo and Osaka in May, and New York and Beverly Hills in October.

H&M Recycled Threads

Leave it to the Brit label H&M to produce sustainable style using recycled PET bottles or textile waste. Available this spring, these styles are a nod to the 60’s and 70’s and include stand-outs such as this floral print chiffon dress made from recycled polyester and shorts of  organic cotton or linen.

On the home front, American designer  Tim Byrne re-imagines old factory cast-offs as stylish and functional tables by combining them with iron, exotic wood, aluminum footings and glass.

Rihanna in her see through Jean Paul Gaultier confection of a dress was flashy…and trashy.  Not an improvement from last year’s white dress (on the left). Katy Perry’s angel winged dress made her look like she made a wrong turn off the Victoria’s Secret runway switching places with Heidi Klum somehow along the way.

I found Gwenyth Paltrow‘s navigation down the stairs and onto the piano to harmonize with Cee Lo Green a riveting performance but for all the wrong reasons.  I couldn’t stop staring at her Christian Louboutin Futura multi-colored stiletto booties and thinking that any moment she would fall, making it hard to focus on her vocals (not to mention the muppets). I have to give the stylist credit for the shoe selection itself – it complimented the look of the number well.

Three ladies topped the fashion charts with their glamorous looks. Florence Welch with her Givenchy swan dress was a standout. Kathy Griffin looked svelte in her yellow metallic brocade dress.  All grown up in her J. Mendel dress and Judith Leiber clutch was a shimmering Selena Gomez.
